As many countries have stopped counting individual cases, particularly of milder illness, the case count is significantly lower than the actually number of cases that have occurred.......
.....Influenza activity continues to increase in the northern temperate zones across the world. In North America, the United States is now experiencing nationwide rates of Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) well above seasonal baseline rates with high rates of pandemic H1N1 2009 virus detections in clinical laboratory specimens. Canada is reporting increases in ILI rates for the third straight week with some provinces now crossing the baseline. Mexico also reports high intensity and active transmission in some areas of the country. Western Europe and northern Asia are experiencing increased rates of ILI, well above baseline in some countries but activity is generally not as widespread as in North America. Of note, nearly half of the influenza viruses detected in China are seasonal influenza A (H3N2) viruses, which appeared prior to and is co-circulating with pandemic H1N1 2009 virus.

Fake or diluted drugs can result in prolonged illness or death or can lead to the development of drug-resistant bacteria, he said.
The existence of counterfeit drugs "is highly elevated in developing countries," he said.
He said the World Health Organization estimates that in many parts of sub-Saharan Africa, Southeast Asia and Latin America more than 30 percent of all medicines are counterfeit, and that at least 50 percent of anti-malarial drugs sold in Africa are fake.

During week 33 (August 16-22, 2009), influenza activity remained stable or continued to decline in most areas of the U.S. However, activity appears to be increasing in the Southeast.
A total of 8,843 hospitalizations and 556 deaths associated with 2009 influenza A (H1N1) viruses have been reported to CDC an increase from 7,983 hospitalizations and 522 deaths from the prior week
* During week 33:
o 804 (18.0%) specimens tested by U.S. World Health Organization (WHO) and National Respiratory and Enteric Virus Surveillance System (NREVSS) collaborating laboratories and reported to CDC/Influenza Division were positive for influenza.
o 99% of all subtyped influenza A viruses being reported to CDC were 2009 influenza A (H1N1) viruses.
o The proportion of deaths attributed to pneumonia and influenza (P&I) was below the epidemic threshold.
o Five influenza-associated pediatric deaths were reported and all were associated with a 2009 influenza A (H1N1) virus infection.
o The proportion of outpatient visits for influenza-like illness (ILI) was below the national baseline. Region IV reported ILI above their region-specific baseline.
o Two states and Puerto Rico reported geographically widespread influenza activity, 13 states reported regional influenza activity, 10 states and the District of Columbia reported local influenza activity, 24 states reported sporadic influenza activity, one state reported no influenza activity, and Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands did not report.
The influenza activity reported by state and territorial epidemiologists indicates geographic spread of both seasonal influenza and 2009 influenza A (H1N1) viruses and does not measure the severity of influenza activity.
During week 33, the following influenza activity was reported:
* Widespread influenza activity was reported by Puerto Rico and two states (Alaska and Georgia).

The researchers who made the discovery scanned the spinal cords of volunteers while applying painful heat to one arm. Then they rubbed a cream onto the arm and told the volunteers that it contained a painkiller – but in fact it had no active ingredient. During week 33 (August 16-22, 2009), influenza activity remained stable or continued to decline in most areas of the U.S. However, activity appears to be increasing in the Southeast.
A total of 8,843 hospitalizations and 556 deaths associated with 2009 influenza A (H1N1) viruses have been reported to CDC an increase from 7,983 hospitalizations and 522 deaths from the prior week
* During week 33:
o 804 (18.0%) specimens tested by U.S. World Health Organization (WHO) and National Respiratory and Enteric Virus Surveillance System (NREVSS) collaborating laboratories and reported to CDC/Influenza Division were positive for influenza.
o 99% of all subtyped influenza A viruses being reported to CDC were 2009 influenza A (H1N1) viruses.
o The proportion of deaths attributed to pneumonia and influenza (P&I) was below the epidemic threshold.
o Five influenza-associated pediatric deaths were reported and all were associated with a 2009 influenza A (H1N1) virus infection.
o The proportion of outpatient visits for influenza-like illness (ILI) was below the national baseline. Region IV reported ILI above their region-specific baseline.
o Two states and Puerto Rico reported geographically widespread influenza activity, 13 states reported regional influenza activity, 10 states and the District of Columbia reported local influenza activity, 24 states reported sporadic influenza activity, one state reported no influenza activity, and Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands did not report.
The influenza activity reported by state and territorial epidemiologists indicates geographic spread of both seasonal influenza and 2009 influenza A (H1N1) viruses and does not measure the severity of influenza activity.
During week 33, the following influenza activity was reported:
* Widespread influenza activity was reported by Puerto Rico and two states (Alaska and Georgia).
* Regional influenza activity was reported by 13 states (Alabama, California, Florida, Hawaii, Kentucky, Maine, Mississippi, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, North Carolina, Oklahoma, and South Carolina).

Subliminal messages are images shown so quickly that viewers don't consciously "see" them, according to background information in the University College London study.
It included 50 volunteers who were shown a series of words on a computer screen. The words appeared for only a fraction of a second, much too briefly for the participants to consciously read them. The words were either positive (for example, cheerful, peace, flower), negative (murder, despair, agony), or neutral (box, kettle, ear).
As the words were displayed, the participants were asked to choose whether they were positive, negative or neutral. Their choices were most accurate when responding to negative words.
"There has been much speculation about whether people can process emotional information unconsciously, for example pictures, faces and words. We have shown that people can perceive the emotional value of subliminal messages and have demonstrated conclusively that people are much more attuned to negative words," study leader Professor Nilli Lavie said in a Wellcome Trust news release.
"Clearly, there are evolutionary advantages to responding rapidly to emotional information. We can't wait for our consciousness to kick in if we see someone running towards us with a knife or if we drive under rainy or foggy weather conditions and see a sign warning 'danger,'" Lavie said.
The findings, published in the journal Emotion, have implications for the use of subliminal marketing in advertising and in public service announcements, such as safety campaigns.
"Negative words may have more of a rapid impact," Lavie said. "'Kill your speed' should be more noticeable than 'Slow down.' More controversially, highlighting a competitor's negative qualities may work on a subliminal level much more effectively than shouting about your own selling points."
